Salinity effects on growth properties of hybrid grouper, TG×GG (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus x E. lanceolattus)

The success in hybridization between tiger grouper and giant grouper (TG×GG) has been the hope for grouper aquaculture industry since hybrid is commonly accepted to have acquired hybrid vigors such as excellent growth performance, high resistance to disease and can tolerate wide range of salinities. This study was done to determine the effects of salinities (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ppt) on the growth properties of the TG×GG hybrid under controlled laboratory conditions fed with pellet diet. The growth properties namely, food consumption (FC), food conversion ratio (FCR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were measured over a 60 days experimental period. The best growth performance was recorded at 15 ppt (FC: 2.8±0.0 g day-1, FCR: 1.2±0.3 and SGR: 0.8±0.3 % day-1) while the lowest at 30 ppt (FC: 3.5±0.0 g day-1 , FCR: 1.9±0.3 and SGR: 0.6±0.3 % day-1). There was no significant differences (P>0.05) observed in growth performance between any of the groups 10 and 30 ppt. The findings of this study suggest that 15 and 20 ppt are optimum salinity range for the culture of TG×GG hybrid. The data obtained from this study would be useful in better quaculture production of TG×GG hybrid grouper.
