Plant Pathology: Regional diversity of Sclerotium rolfsiiisolates in Bihar, India and the determination of pathogenicity in cucumber

Cultivation of cucumbers is largely affected by several biotic factors. Among diseases, collar root causes significant damage to them and ultimately responsible for yield loss. Being a dreaded pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii is a soil inhabitant and nonspecific facultative parasite which is found in almost all types of agro-ecological systems, having wide host range (infects over 270 families of plants); the collar rot dynamics in cucurbits has a large variability, which is untouched. Variation is a rule in most of the root infecting fungi. Pathogens exhibits variation in terms of morphological, biological, chemical and their pathogenic character. Several biochemicals products determine the pathogenicity of the pathogen and difference in their content demarkate the isolates from one another in terms of their pathogenicity and hence create a large variability. However, wide variation among isolates of this pathogen indicates genetic exchange in mycelia among them in nature. This hypothesis has a vivid point because the sexual stage of this fungus is rare in nature and its role in the life cycle of the fungus is unknown.
