Nanotechnology-A Boon to Agriculture

Agriculture has been portraying the role of saviour for millions of farmers across the world. World population is expected to grow by over a third, or 2.3 billion people, between 2009 and 2050. Increase in population has not kept pace with increases in food production. And providing sufficient and healthy food is becoming a very important challenge in the near future. Agriculture in 21st century is facing a wide spectrum of challenges such as stagnation in crop yield, low nutrient use efficiency, post harvest losses etc. To address these problems, there is a need to explore one of the frontier technology known as ‘Nanotechnology’ that would promote adequate productivity and quality while ensuring environmental safety. Nanotechnology is the design, fabrication and utilization of materials, devices and system through control of matter on the nanometre length scale. The development of nanotechnology creates an excellent opportunity to address and improve the complex technical issues like crop improvement, efficiency of nutrient use through nanoformulation of fertilizers, surveillance and control of pest and diseases. Apart from that it has great advantage in food sector like nano-encapsulation of food nutraceuticals or bioactive molecules, developing of new generation of packaging coverages (Films) and use of multiple chips (Nanobiosensors) for labelling products that is considered as fundamental step to automated control of storage. The research and development in nanotechnology has been recognized as a paramount importance and therefore further steps should be taken in developing countries like India to extend nanotechnology research to agricultural sector in order to attain its broad national goal of sustainable agriculture growth.
