Intracerebroventricular injection of Streptozotocin promotes increase in body temperature: implications for Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that promotes the decline of cognitive abilities and noncognitive symptoms that include alteration of body temperature (Tb). AD is well accepted to be a multifactorial disease, since it is related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors, in which anesthesia-induced hypothermia is suggested as a risk factor. Also, AD can be classified as early-onset familial (FAD) or late-onset sporadic (SAD), where the latter corresponds to 99% of cases. Intracerebroventricularstreptozotocin (icv-STZ) injection has been used as an important model to study SAD. However, there is no information about the effect of icv-STZ injection on the thermoregulatory system and the effect of isoflurane-induced hypothermia in this model. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the icv-STZ injection in low-dose and isoflurane-induced hypothermia in Tb of rats.
