Characterization, Fate and Transport of Nano-Pollutants in Aqueous Systems

The worldwide surge demand for a vast array of applications produced from engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has expanded the global industrial scale production in masses for the past several decades. This has inevitably cause the release of these manufactured materials into the environment. The increasing existence of NPs and its impact towards human health and the environment especially the aquatic system has sparked a great concern among both the scientific community and the public. It is therefore crucial to gain an in-depth understanding of the properties of the manufactured nanoparticles together with the various transformations they undergo that determine their behavior and transportation. The fundamental physiochemical aspects of manufactured metal oxide nanoparticles are addressed by giving examples on ZnO and SiO2 in a separate section. The properties of nano colloids from industrial wastewater are also elaborated. An essential point of view is given to evaluate their occurrence, fate and transport in the natural aquatic environment as a result of their interactions with other nanoparticles or natural colloids.
